Lisbon as the main gateway
Lisbon is usually the first route to compare because it connects exceptionally well with Cape Verde and gives travellers more flexibility than many other European gateways. TAP Air Portugal is the main scheduled carrier, operating regular routes from Lisbon to both Sal (SID) and Praia (RAI), making Portugal one of the easiest European access points for the islands. SATA/Azores Airlines may also offer seasonal options depending on demand and routing. Flight times from Lisbon to Cape Verde are typically around three and a half to four hours, which makes the route one of the shortest and most convenient European connections to the archipelago.
For beach-focused holidays, some Portuguese travellers still use package operators for Sal and Boa Vista, particularly during Christmas, February and Easter demand peaks. However, booking flight-only routes through TAP often creates more flexibility for travellers who want boutique hotels, island-hopping or a less resort-focused itinerary. Sal remains the simplest beach entry point, while Praia works better for travellers prioritising Santiago, culture and onward domestic connections.
Sal versus Praia
Fly to Sal if the goal is beach resorts, Santa Maria and simple holiday logistics. Fly to Praia if you want Santiago, history, city life and onward domestic options.
Cultural connection
Portugal-to-Cape-Verde trips can feel more personal and cultural than a standard beach break. Add Cidade Velha, Mindelo or Santo Antão if you want the trip to feel deeper.
Planning island-hopping
Avoid tight same-day connections. Domestic travel can be rewarding, but it needs buffer time and a route that does not try to cover too many islands.
