Best months for winter sun
November to March is the classic Europe-to-Cape-Verde window. It is warm, dry and attractive when northern Europe is dark and cold.
Best shoulder months
April, May and June can be excellent for a more balanced trip, with warm conditions, strong beach appeal and often a calmer feel outside the most crowded holiday weeks.
School holiday strategy
Christmas, New Year, February school holidays and Easter need earlier planning. Families should compare room types, transfers and resort facilities before price alone.
When to add culture or hiking
For São Vicente, Santo Antão, Santiago and Fogo, avoid building the trip around only beach weather. These islands reward travellers who want scenery, food, music, villages and hiking.
Month by month for European visitors
November feels like the opening of Cape Verde’s winter-sun season for Europeans. Conditions are warm, dry and calmer than the peak Christmas period, which makes it one of the strongest months for travellers wanting beaches alongside hiking or island-hopping. Hotels and flights are usually still reasonably priced, especially outside major UK school breaks, making November one of the better-value months overall.
December changes dramatically depending on timing. The first two weeks are often relaxed and comparatively balanced for pricing, while Christmas and New Year become one of the most premium periods of the year. Warm beach weather draws heavy demand from across Europe, particularly for Sal and Boa Vista, and the best resorts and family room categories often sell out far earlier than travellers expect.
January is one of the strongest months for beach weather and kitesurfing conditions, especially around Sal. The atmosphere feels lively without necessarily reaching the intensity of the Christmas rush, although demand from northern Europe remains consistently high. School half-term demand begins building toward the end of the month, particularly for direct winter-sun routes from the UK and mainland Europe.
February combines some of Cape Verde’s windiest conditions with one of its most culturally energetic periods. Carnival season in Mindelo gives São Vicente a completely different atmosphere, while Sal and Boa Vista continue attracting beach-focused travellers escaping European winter. Prices can rise sharply around school holidays, especially for family resorts and direct flights, so booking early is important.
March is often one of the best-balanced months overall. The weather remains reliably warm, beaches are still attractive and the intense holiday pressure of Christmas and February begins to ease. Easter timing can create short premium windows, but outside those dates March often delivers a calmer and better-value atmosphere than earlier winter peaks.
April feels like a classic shoulder month in Cape Verde. Temperatures remain comfortable, hiking conditions in islands such as Santo Antão are still enjoyable and beach weather continues to work well without the same winter-season crowding. It is usually a solid value month unless Easter holidays push demand higher on specific weeks.
May is one of the strongest months for couples and independent travellers who prefer quieter beaches and a slower atmosphere. The islands feel warm and relaxed, flights can still price attractively from Europe and there is often more flexibility across hotels and island-hopping logistics. It suits travellers who want the climate benefits of winter sun without the pressure of peak-season demand.
June begins shifting toward a warmer and slightly more humid feel, although beach conditions on Sal and Boa Vista remain very appealing. European summer demand has not fully peaked yet, which means good-value opportunities can still appear before July and August pricing rises. June works especially well for travellers wanting strong beach weather before the height of Mediterranean summer tourism.
